RAID EXPLAINED
There are many different ways to organize data in a RAIDZ array. These ways are called “RAIDZ levels”. Different RAIDZ levels have different speed and fault tolerance properties.
(Redundant Array of Independent Disks)
The ZFS file system uses it’s own naming system for software RAID. ZFS RAID configurations are functionally identical to standard RAID levels.
Stripes data across multiple drives or VDevs (virtual devices).
Requires minimum of two drives and generally is very similar to a RAID1. Data is mirrored between drives or VDevs (virtual devices).
RAIDZ1 is similar to RAID5 and requires a minimum of 2 drives or VDevs (virtual devices). Data is striped across drives or VDevs (virtual drives) along with a parity block.
